Dolphin Echo Pool Cleaner
The Dolphin Echo is one of the brands performance-level models, designed to clean the floors and walls of modest in-ground pools or above ground pools up to 33 feet long. It wont blow you away with a long list of fancy features, but it is a solid robotic pool cleaner. Plus, it costs less than $500. Because it comes from a well-known brand with a modest price tag, the Echo is on many pool owners short lists. We tested the Echo ourselves and put together a review of what all youll have to contend with if you purchase it, as well as how it can make your life easier.
Echo Specs
CleverClean Technology
The Echo is powered by CleverClean technology, which is an advanced navigation system and scanning software that ensures your pools walls and floors are cleaned with an efficient route.
One Cleaning Mode
The straightforward power supply has one button and one standard cleaning mode a two-hour cleaning job that covers the entirety of the floors and walls.
Top-Loading Filter Basket
Dolphin equipped the Echo with a high-capacity, top-loading filter basket. This makes for easy removal and cleaning.
Two-Year Warranty
The 24-month warranty covers all plastic parts. The power supply, cable, and motor are covered for 12 months.
Cleans Floors and Walls
The Echo isnt restricted to just pool floors. It can climb walls as well, thanks very much in part to the powerful grips on the dual tracks.
Active Scrubbing B
rush
Although the Echo has only one brush, it is an active scrubbing brush located on the front of the cleaner. It rotates at twice the speed of the robots movement, so it can scrub grime from the surface.
One-Touch Power Supply
The Echos power supply is as simple as it gets with only one button. While it lacks the functionality to schedule a weekly timer or alternate modes, it certainly wont confuse you.
Lightweight
Weighing only 13.8 pounds, the Echo is easy to lift and handle, especially when pulling it out of the water.
Echo Cleaning Ability
Getting the Echo out of the box and into the water is fast and easy. It comes ready to go all you have to do is plug in the power supply and drop the Echo to the bottom of the pool. With the push of one button, it starts its cleaning job.
CleverClean Technology
Dolphins CleverClean technology is designed to keep their robotic pool cleaners from roaming aimlessly and missing the same spots over and over. Once the Echo got to work, we watched it traverse the bottom of the pool and climb walls without missing a beat, but we didnt notice it take any smart route, per se. Some higher-end robotic pool cleaners follow a grid-like pattern on their cleaning jobs, but the Echo didnt seem to. However, it still covered the overwhelming majority of the pools surface, so we give its CleverClean technology two thumbs up for getting the job done.
Climbing Action
The Echo is designed to climb walls, but it isnt designed to climb to the waterline or tackle steps. We were interested to see how well it actually climbed the walls, and we were impressed with its ability to cling to vertical surfaces without falling backward.
It powered up walls with ease, and it even popped above the waters surface to scrub the waterline on a few pass-throughs. This isnt a featured functionality on the Echo, but it was a nice surprise to watch it scrub above and beyond. It fell back two or three times while climbing the walls, but the Echo quickly rerouted and climbed the same surface strip again.
The pool we used to test the Echo had underwater steps in the shallow end. Again, the Echo isnt designed to climb underwater features like that, but it still managed to climb up and over the bottom three steps before falling back to the bottom. This was a solid indication of the Echos powerful tracks and grips clinging to the pools surface, which was more than we expected for a robotic pool cleaner at this price range.
Scrubbing and Suction Power
As far as mobility goes, the Echo moved with impressive dexterity. But the real test was in how well it cleaned.
The front scrubbing brush went to work quickly, sucking up settled sand and silt that was visible in the shallow end. The powerful suction captured most of the larger debris, leaving behind only one or two leaves after the Echos initial cleaning job. Within those two hours, the Echo improved the waters clarity from the murky state it was in beforehand, but it wasnt as crystal clear as we would have hoped.
Fortunately, the remedy lies in the filter.
Necessary Filter Upgrade
The Echo comes standard with a large-capacity net canister. All in all, its very simple to clean and maintain, but its not as efficient at capturing smaller-to-medium-sized particles. If you need to clean up a hundred leaves after a storm, its what you turn to. But for everyday cleanings, the standard net canister leaves something to be desired.
Fortunately, you can upgrade to a fine, double layer filter basket for a small additional price. If you research the Echo online, youll also find this suggestion in many reviews. We purchased the fine filter basket and put the Echo to work for a second job with the new filtration system in place, and the results were above and beyond what we expected.
Using the fine filter basket, the Echo grabbed smaller particles far better than with the standard net basket. It even improved the water clarity to the crystal-clear shine we initially hoped for. The double filtration of the fine filter was especially obvious when we opened the filtration system and found a substantial layer of sludge at the bottom. It also had a green tinge from scrubbing away algae, which we didnt even know was growing on the pools sides.
Maintenance and Ease of Use
Filters
As far as maintaining filters go, the Echo cant get any easier. The top-loading cartridge pops out of the top of the robotic pool cleaner, so theres no finagling it to shimmy it out of a tight spot. To clean it, simply dump the debris and rinse the filters with a hose. Just be sure you dont let the filter dry out while dirty.
Easy Operation
The Echo only has one button on its power supply. While you cant set a weekly timer or change up cleaning modes, you certainly wont get confused while operating this robotic pool cleaner. Just push the button.
Lightweight
With many Dolphin robotic pool cleaners, well suggest paying extra for the caddy so storage and transportation are easier. But the Echo is so lightweight and easy to carry, you only need to consider the caddy if you anticipate struggling to carry the Echos 13.8 pounds.
The Pros
Inexpensive
The Echo costs about $600 - less if you shop around. You wont find many solid robotic pool cleaners on the market for less than that.
Powerful Scrubbing and Suction
The front active scrubbing brush works hard, and the Echo is more than capable of vacuuming as well as it scrubs. Just look in the filter (preferably the fine basket not the standard net canister) to see how well it works.
Low Maintenance
Thanks to its lightweight design and the top-loading filter basket, you wont be cursing the Echo for being a hassle to maintain. Carry it around with ease, and simply rinse the filters clean after each job. Beyond that, theres not much to contend with.
Energy Efficient
The Echo is not reliant on your pools power supply. It only requires an outdoor outlet to run, and it costs about 5 cents an hour to operate. Compared to old-school suction cleaners, thatll save you approximately one arm and a leg in electricity bills this summer.
The Cons
Spring for the Fine Filter
The standard filter basket that comes with the Echo is subpar. However, you can remedy the whole debacle by buying the fine filter basket with dual level filtration. We wish this came standard with the Echo, as it makes or breaks the performance of the robotic pool cleaner. So, unless youre willing to buy the fine filter, we cant recommend the Echo with full confidence.
No Cord Swivel
Lots of Dolphin robotic pool cleaners are equipped with a patented anti-tangle swivel. The Echo doesnt have one, which makes the long cord prone to tangles and kinks. To prevent any knots from building up, its a good idea to stretch the cord out once a week to relax any tension from building up.
Our Verdict
The Dolphin Echo robotic pool cleaner is a solid machine. It wont blow your socks off, but youre not paying for that with a price tag less than $500. It scrubs floors and walls with unwavering dexterity, even poking up to scrub the waterline from time to time. Plus, its about as easy to care for as any other robotic pool cleaner on the market.
Youll need to purchase the fine filter basket to really get the most out of the Echo, but its absolutely worth it and makes a world of difference. With the fine filter basket in place, the Echo will capture more fine and medium-sized debris than youll realize was in your pool. If youre on a budget but still want your modestly sized pool to look sparkling clean, the Echo is a solid buy

Customer Reviews
How would you rate Dolphin Echo Pool Cleaner?*
Very efficient Product
This is one of the best cleaners we have tried. Doesnt miss an inch and takes no time to get it clean! Highly recommen dolphin products. You will not regret it!! Money well spent!
Better than expectd
The Dolphin Echo does as manufacturer states and MORE. It is surprising how much sand it also collects from bottom of pool that most other unit do not pick up.
Love it
Best pool cleaner I have ever used.
It's a fantastic machine
It really does the job and has saved me tons of labor hours fishing leaves out of my lap pool. I just love my Dolphin, its great!
Echo Dolphin
I am very pleased with this machine and it has been an efficient product. My wife and I both have physical problems that limit how much time we can use to clean the pool and this machine makes up for it. Plus we can save the cost of pool services.
Great Invention
So far this has made pool maintenance and ownership a dream. Truly enjoy. Wish it would wash and put itself away. Just joking maybe in another version. Great invention I do not do reviews so I hope that adds validity.
Great Cleaner
Does very well cleaning my 15 x 30 pool bottom and climbs the walls like it wants to get out of the pool! The amount of tile cleaning depends on the time of use.
Love it!
This thing is my best friend and cleans my pool so good. The only down fall is that my power source recently turned off and wont turn back on. I dont have the time to scrub and brush the pool everyday. I called and they dont repair I can only buy a new one which was really upsetting. Its just over 2 years old and already broke down. I dont have the extra cash to get another one for a while I figured this would last a long time for how much it costs.
Good machine
The product cleans the pool wry well but the cord always kinks and it kinks in several places. Make a machine with a kink free cord and it would be perfect.
Now I have one!
After hours of researching pool robots, I settled on this base model. Today it worked like a champ, breaching the waterline and scrubbing the tile, on my 31×15 x5ft deep gunnite pool. , but it seemed to work great today. I will update if it doesnt make it for the long haul My only regret is that it has only one program. Im not sure how long the run time is
My new toy
Opened the box. Read the skimpy instructions and threw it in the pool. The machine acted very confused, made many jerky back and forth moves without covering much territory. I got tired of watching it, I left and came back two hours later. The pool was spotless. Cant ask for more than that. My pool is twenty by forty with rounded ends and steps and seats on the deep end. 29,000 gal. Barely missed a crevice. This machine replaced an Auqabot in the same price range and seems to work much better.
Do more research before you buy.
It does work, BUT the cord gets tangled very easily so I constantly have to take it out of the pool, stretch it out and lay it in the sun for a day to straighten. Apparently this is a known problem. Also, the filter basket did not hold up well, I had to replace it after a year (no warranty on this) and it costs $100!
Poor filter basket --- expensive to replace
It is interesting that most all the Echo is covered by warranty except the filter basket. Ive had my Echo for nearly 2 years and now am on my third filter basket which costs about $70 each time I replace it. My chemical level is never extreme, and I dont leave the unit in the pool, and still the wire mesh disintegrates. Poorly designed for a product this expensive. Wire cord continually tangles. Beware!
Useless!
I bought one of these from a pool company that is now out of business. It has a cord that immediately winds into a ball. The tracks fall off after about 15 minutes of work. It only picks up a small bit of soil & has to be emptied often. Only someone who knows absolutely nothing about pools would market such a piece of junk!
