The DX line of robotic pool cleaners from Dolphin are tried and true. These classic designs have been on the market for a while, but Dolphin engineers have continued to upgrade and improve them over the years. The DX4 S is no exception, as it is the improved big brother to the Dolphin DX4. Touting smarter technology and more efficient cleaning, you can find the DX4 S priced anywhere from $700 to $900. From climbing all the way to waterlines and analyzing your pools surfaces, its a feature-rich machine that intrigues even the most seasoned pool owners. Lets dive in to see how it measures up to all of these features in reality.
What Sets the DX4 S Apart Intelligent Scanning
Also known as CleverClean technology, this is a scanning software from Dolphin engineers that ensures the robotic pool cleaner doesnt overlook any pool surfaces during its cleaning job.
Anti-Tangle Swivel
All hail the anti-tangle swivel! This patented little device prevents the cleaners cord from tangling up into knots that make it stop in its tracks. You can rest easy you wont have to unkink this cord anytime soon.
Weekly Timer
Via the power supply or remote control, you can schedule the DX4 S to run once a week, once every other day, or once every three days.
Cleans Floors, Walls, and Waterlines
The DX4 S is equipped to scrub floors and walls, even climbing up above the waters surface to the waterline. It isnt designed to navigate steps or underw
ater benches, though.
Dual Filter Cartridges
Gone are the days of those annoying filter bags. When you flip the DX4 S over, you can unlatch the bottom to release the dual filter cartridges. These snap apart easily for straightforward cleaning.
Filter Fullness Indicator
The little yellow light on the DX4 S flashes to let you know once the filter is full and needs emptying. Otherwise, you can let the machine run to its hearts content.
Filters 4,233 Gallons per Hour
Talk about purifying. The DX4 S is a tank when it comes to tackling dirty water, and it can filter at a larger capacity than youd expect from a robotic pool cleaner under a thousand dollars.
DX4 S Design
Compared to many of Dolphins other robotic pool cleaners, the DX4 S isnt exactly a looker. It is colored in hues of gray, and the top-heavy handle makes you wonder how it can climb walls without creating resistance in the water.
The DX4 S weighs 22 pounds. It is remarkably nimble underwater considering how much it weighs, but its not a breeze to carry around or flip over to access the filter system. It doesnt come with a caddy, but its certainly worth considering if carrying around the DX4 S will be an issue for you.
Despite its old-school shape and dreary color scheme, the DX4 S is an undoubtedly solid machine. The plastic exterior is durable and wont scratch easily, and the plastic grips on the tracks wont wear down with regular use. Plus, the scrubbing brushes are fitted with pliable-yet-tough bristles thatll scrub grime from the surface without weathering or scratching your pool.
DX4 S Cleaning Power
In classic Dolphin fashion, the DX4 S arrives virtually ready to get into the pool. There is no assembly required, and you can likely have it in the water within 10 minutes of unboxing it.
Climbing Ability
Once the DX4 S started its initial cleaning job, it seemed to traverse the pool surface in a grid-like pattern. This is the smart technology at work, keeping tabs on where the DX4 S has and hasnt cleaned.
Despite the tall handle that we thought might create underwater resistance, the DX4 S climbed the walls remarkably well. We didnt notice it fall from a straight climb once. It reached the waterline on virtually every cleaning pass-through, doing a little shimmy at the top to cover more surface area and move over for the next strip of pool surface.
The DX4 S climbed up and over the curved coves on the bottom of the pool with ease, too. The only areas it struggled were the underwater steps and bench. It climbed the two bottom steps before falling backward, and it lingered on the underwater bench in the shallow end for a few minutes before giving up and moving on.
Scrubbing and Suction
The pool we used to test the DX4 S had plenty of visible debris littering the bottom. Several windy days had blown in leaves from nearby oak trees, as well as silty top soil that clouded the clarity of the water.
While the DX4 S worked, it was obvious it could pick up the larger debris with ease. It left behind a clean strip of pool flooring with each pass-through. We saw its scrubbing power at work in a particularly troublesome area of the shallow end where a patch of black algae was growing. The DX4 S climbed up and over the algae while the scrubbing brushes spun rapidly. When it descended back down into the water, it had all but cleared the algae from that patch of wall.
The Filters
The DX4 S uses dual filter cartridges. These are far, far easier to clean than traditional filter bags that can be messy and flimsy to work with. However, you access the robots filtration system from the bottom. This means you have to flip it upside down before you can unlatch the bottom panel and remove the cartridges for regular cleaning. Because the DX4 S weighs 22 pounds (not counting whatever residual water is in there after a cleaning), that can be a big ask of some pool owners. So, be advised, its a bit of a chore to flip this robotic pool cleaner upside down to access the filters.
But once you have accessed the filtration system, youll be amazed at just how much it captured. When we opened the dual filter cartridge after the initial run of the DX4 S, they were jam-packed with large debris like leaves, twigs, and flower buds. Best of all, they were also lined with a muddy sand mixture. This means the DX4 S actually scrubbed and filtered out smaller particles that were invisible to the naked eye.
This filtration system might be a chore to get to, but thats where its shortcomings end. Itll clean and capture debris with the best robotic pool cleaners on the market today.
Maintenance and Ease of Use
The multi-function power supply isnt a one-button operation, but its still very straightforward. You can start and stop a cleaning job easily, and you can schedule the DX4 S to run once a week, twice a week, or three times a week.
We mentioned it before, but well say it again: get the caddy. Yes, it costs more money. However, itll make your life a lot easier, especially if youre concerned about lugging the DX4 S to and from the pool shed. Plus, it has a hook around which you can wrap the power cord.
What Youll Love About the DX4 S Under $1K
If you do your research, you can find the DX4 S for a very reasonable price, ranging from $700 to $900. Dependent on where you buy it from, it may come with a warranty to cover any mishaps in the first year or two.
Cleans Like a Champ
The DX4 S really does the heavy lifting for you underwater. Its intelligent enough to choose an efficient cleaning route, and it delivers full cleaning coverage (minus underwater trouble spots like steps and benches). Just look in the filter after a cleaning job and we promise youll be impressed.
No More Tangles
The anti-tangle swivel is a game-changer. The DX4 S never got tangled up during its cleaning job not even a few kinks. With constant use, you may need to stretch the cord out to relax any tension. But for the most part, its tangle-free.
Weekly Timer
The customizations of the timer are a nice perk, especially in the summertime when youre running your robotic pool cleaner more frequently.
What You Should Know Its Heavy
The caddy is a great reliever for the heft of the DX4 S. But just be aware that it can be a chore to flip the machine over to access the filtration system. Its easier to do so when its on the ground and you can tip it backwards.
The Remote is Finnicky
The DX4 S comes standard with a remote control. Its a nice addition, but theres a learning curve that comes with it. Unfortunately, the cleaner doesnt come with an in-depth user guide on how to operate the remote control, so youll have to use a lot of trial and error to figure it out. If all else fails, simply use the power supply to command the DX4 S
Our Final Thoughts
Truth be told, its hard to find a robotic pool cleaner with this many working features for this low of a price. It delivers a deep clean and moves powerfully underwater, and its filtration system is on par with some premium-class models.
We wish it came with a caddy so its weight wouldnt be such a burden, and it certainly wont win any beauty contests with its drab color scheme and antler-like handles. However, it will save you hours of manual labor, and its a smart upgrade from traditional, power-hungry suction cleaners. So, if you value a lot of cleaning with minimal effort, you want the DX4 S in your pool

Absolutely fabulous so far. Exceeded my hopes. Finally a cleaner that doesn't get stuck and climbs the steps. It's a little heavy when I take it out but still pretty easy. It does a fabulous job. I highly recommend it. Very, very happy.
Very good product & service

I bought a house with an inground pool in 2016 and I had never delt with a pool before. 2 weeks after I bought a DX4 to clean it up, which it did just fine, the thing got stuck in the shallow end ladder. Something was not right with the tracks after that so I called customer service and made arrangements to send it back. They fixed it and sent it back to me about a week later, all free of charge. The thing has been perfect ever since. Decals have come off in spots and I may need to replace a couple parts but havent yet. It still works just fine. If I ever need to, Ill get another.
Saved our summer!

We have struggled for years with our clunky suction cleaner. This Dolphin is amazing. Super simple to set up and go. My husband loves the filter! He says it has saved him from hours of manual labor. We love our dolphin. Kids are excited for the summer.
Life Saver, this thing is AWESOME!

Drop it in and push a button. My pool has never looked better and keeping my pool clean is so easy now. All of the years I have been so frustrated trying to keep it clean or spend the extra time doing so, has not made me enjoy owning my pool again. I should have gotten one of these years ago! A must own to keep your pool super clean.
Works OK - But Could Do Better

Bought this Pool Cleaner and it arrived less than a week ago. Our in ground pool has been in serious need of a complete cleaning after three weeks of high winds and rainstorms bringing lots of small debris, pollen and dust into our pool. So far I have run this robot 6 times and it's picked up most of the large debris and about half of the fine dust and pollen in our pool. Will likely need at least another 6-8 cleaning cycles to get most of the fine debris removed. Biggest downside of this robot is the small capacity for debris. It usually will run only 20 to 30 minutes before the "full filter" light comes on. Also does a poor job cleaning steps in our pool; so I use our portable pool vac for that job.
Good not great

Works well. Not as well as older model, I had before. The older model had a cloth vacuum bag and did not need to be emptied as often. Also, this one makes marks on the bottom of pool.
OK performance

So far, it has performed OK. Not too sure about its Intelliscan technology - cleaning pattern seems as haphazard as previous robot cleaners. Takes the full 2.5 hrs. to completely clean the bottom of my 16x40 pool. I am somewhat disappointed with its wall climbing capabilities. A few times it climbs the wall to the tile border. But most times, it only travels about half way up the wall. On the positive side, it is easy to use, easy to clean and caddy keeps everything tidy.
My honest experience

Purchased August of last year. It functioned well initially. Stored per instructions, but motor didnt work this spring. Under warranty and motor was replaced and is functioning again. New surfaced pool with correct pool chemistry. Have appreciated Maytronics honoring of warranty and hope not to run into further mechanical issues considering the price.
will not walk the walks and clean walls as advertised

We have used the Dolphin 4 for several years and it quit working. Replaced it with the DX4s as we thought it was the appropriate replacement after the 4 has been discontinued. Got it in and immediately put it our indoor pool.In the couple of hours it ran it only climbed the wall 15 times. Since we have 120 linear feet to clean at that rate we would have to do it 10 times straight to clean the entire wall. The Dophin 4 would climb and then walk across the surface for several feet before submerging. Tried to return or exchange the next day but the company said it was out of box and refused return. Stuck with it
The power supply doesnt last

The cleaner works great when it runs. However I have had issues with the power supply
