Dolphin S300i Pool Cleaner
If you ask any seasoned pool owner what their biggest beef is with owning a pool, theyll say its spending more time cleaning it than enjoying it. Dolphin engineers have been helping pool owners enjoy a better balance of maintenance and fun with their many models of robotic pool cleaners, and their S Series is one of the most popular of the bunch.
The S300i is the top of the S Series line. Its feature-packed with smart technology, and it promises enough cleaning gusto to keep you relaxing poolside while it does the hard work. However, it is pricey. At about $1,499 (or less if you hunt around for a deal), its an investment not every pool owner would be willing to make. But if youre a sucker for robotic intelligence and easy maintenance, the S300i might be worth the upgrade.
Design
The S300i weighs 16.5 pounds, which is on the lighter side of most robotic pool cleaners. This makes for easier handling, also in part to the built-in handle. Although its light, the S300i is sturdy. It has a low center of gravity with heavy duty materials to boot. The tough plastic exterior is light yet durable, and the tread of the dual tracks is resistant to wear and tear. Bright blue brushes are located on the front and back of the S300i, and theyre pliable-yet-tough to the touch. Youll also notice exterior jet vents, which come into play with the cleaners PowerStream mobility.
A bright blue 60-foot cord is fitted with Dolphins patented anti-tangle swivel, which prevents the cord from tangl
ing. When you open the top hatch of the S300i, the inner filtration basket handle pops up for easy removal. It also comes with an easy-to-use multi-function power supply.
Features
MyDolphin App
Both the S300 and S300i are Bluetooth compatible with the MyDolphin mobile app, but the S300i offers more options. You can customize your robotic pool cleaners schedule from the app, select cleaning modes and cycle times, and even access user guides and online documentation. The selection of cleaning options gives owners more control with choices like ultra clean, floor only, waterline only, and floor and wall.
The app also allows owners to manually navigate the S300i in the water. Via the manual drive, you can direct the cleaner to trouble spots or particularly dirty areas of the pool. It also has tilt mode, in which you can use your phone almost like a joy stick and tilt it to drive the S300i.
PowerStream Mobility
Dolphins patent-pending mobility system creates a multi-directional waterflow, expelling force out of the robots exterior vents so it can navigate its underwater jobs with precision. This helps the S300i adhere to vertical surfaces, cling to slippery slopes, and more. Plus, it powers the cleaner into hard-to-reach corners and all the way up to waterlines.
Active Scrubbing
The S300i is fitted with two brushes on either end, and the first one is powered to scrub actively. This helps release stuck-on grime or algae so it can be sucked up into the filtration system.
Top-Loading Filter Basket
These are quickly becoming the preferred choice for top-of-the-line filtration systems. The top-loading basket removes easily, and the dual filtration goes above and beyond the other filters in the S Series by having double the filtering capability against both fine and coarse debris. Plus, the S300i comes with the option to use fine or ultra-fine filters, dependent on what your pool needs for any given cleaning job.
Two-Year Full Warranty
Dolphin promises a full two-year warranty when you purchase the S300i from a certified dealer. Unlike the other robotic pool cleaners in the S Series, this warranty has full coverage for even the brushes, tracks, and filters. Some dealers will throw in an extra year of coverage, so do your research before purchasing.
Performance
Wall and Waterline Cleaning
Lots of robotic pool cleaners tout being able to clean walls and waterlines, but few do it as efficiently as the S300i does. It crawled its way up the sides of the pool and reached the waterline on every pass-through. Once at the waterline, it does a little shimmy to the side while the front brush scrubs the above-water surface. Then it descends back down with full control. The PowerStream mobility was obvious as the S300i climbed, leaving a trail of bubbles in its wake as the jets propelled it upward.
Cleaning Ability
Our pool sits beneath two large oak trees, which like to drop acorns and leaves to the bottom of the pool. On top of that, fresh grass clippings were floating around after a recent mow. All that to say, there was plenty for the S300i to cut its teeth on.
As it crawled across the floor of the pool, we saw it capture larger debris and improve water clarity from sucking up smaller particles that were clouding the water. Especially in the shallow end where both coarse and fine debris like to settle, the S300i powered right over it and left cleanliness behind.
Underwater Obstacles
The S300i cleaned walls and waterlines with exceptional precision. Underwater ledges and steps, however, werent so kind to it.
It crawled up and over about 90% of the underwater steps, but it didnt do a superior cleaning job. The steps were just too narrow for the S300i to gain real traction and scrub the surface. It was the same story with the underwater ledge in the shallow end, which juts up and out by about six inches. These tight spaces would be difficult for any robotic pool cleaner to actively scrub, though. So be advised that you may need to supplement the S300is cleaning jobs with manual brushing. It just depends on what the layout of your pool is like.
Using the App
One of the biggest selling points of the S300i is its smart technology. The S300 of the same series has Bluetooth capabilities as well, but it doesnt have quite as many customizable options as the S300i.
The MyDolphin App works on any smart device, and the app had a better connection than some online reviews had us expecting. The scheduling feature of the app is clean and user friendly, more so than the interface of the power supply. It was easy to select cleaning modes, and the S300i has many of them to choose from dependent on your pools needs (ultra clean, floors only, walls only, floors and walls, etc).
Using the manual drive on the MyDolphin app left something to be desired. While the connection was clean, it was frustrating to drive the S300i remotely. The robot would lag and do wheelies, and we werent able to drive it with the precision we would have hoped for. The tilt mode works well in theory, but it was even more frustrating to use than the manual drive. All in all, you can get the S300i to a specific point in your pool, itll just take a while and probably leave you annoyed.
Filters and Maintenance
The top-loading filter basket was packed with debris after an initial 2.5-hour cleaning job. It had captured the larger leaves and acorns, as well as medium-sized pieces like blades of grass and flower buds. Most impressively, the dual-level filtration had sifted out silt and dirt from the pool, leaving a thin sludge around the base of the basket. The filters themselves had even turned a murky brown color from their hard work. The filtration system couldnt have performed better.
In terms of maintaining the filtration system, that also gets two thumbs up. Simply dump the debris and rinse the basket clean. The filters are durable, but in time you may need to replace them if you especially put them through the ringer. Fortunately, filters are covered under warranty for two years.
The S300i doesnt require much else of you once youve cleaned the filtration system. It comes with a two-wheeled caddy, which is the perfect storage spot for the robot, power supply, and 60-foot cord (which wraps up around a special hook on the caddy). Plus, the quick-water release functionality makes lifting the S300i out of the pool much easier on your back than most robotic pool cleaners on the market today.
Is the S300i Worth the Price?
Yes. But it depends on what you want in a robotic pool cleaner.
For the S300i to really earn its keep, you need to value smart technology as a pool owner. This model is certainly advanced and is on par with some of the smartest robotic pool cleaners out there today. The app gives you intelligent remote power, and it comes with plenty of options for cleaning modes and times to give your pool the exact cleaning it needs. Its not without its frustrations, as the manual drive can lag and doesnt move with precision.
If youd be content with a frills-free robotic pool cleaner that only has one button and one cleaning mode, maybe consider the S 50 or S200. But if you want a lightweight and nimble machine thatll clean your pool to a shine and then some, keep the S300i on your shortlist

How would you rate Dolphin S300i Pool Cleaner?*
Little swimmer
Best investment yet. Love the ease of cleaning and setting computer to my needs. Use it weekly or as needed. Set it up and watch it go amazing!
Glass family
We really enjoy our dolphin and the ease of cleaning the basket. I have just one complaint and that is the blue cord that connects to the power pack. It is too stiff and gets twisted in the water. It needs to be more flexible. Overall, it cleans the pool great.
James is amazing
I named mine James and without a doubt the best thing I bought this summer. He definitely has surpassed my wife and kids on my affections list and is about to pass our Golden Retriever. I spent a lot of time every summer vacuuming the bottom to mediocre results not anymore. James has a relentless work ethic and he is doesnt care if I lounge around and drink a beer. He picks up big leaves and the fine silt. Hit one button on the control panel and he is off. Easy to clean out in like a minute. Could not be happier. I dont use the app much except to get it out of the water. The cart could hold it a little more securely when going over bumpy ground. Overall super happy and the cleanest my pool as ever been.
Our Dolphin S300i
I love this robot. We call ours Eva. I am most impressed with her wall climing ability and active brushing. After many, many hours of outstanding performance, its time to replace both white front wheel bushings but Im not sure the part number. Could use some help with that. I highly recommend this unit as it is so well designed. Simply amazing.
Better than the Polaris 9550 Sport
After numerous problems and expensive repairs on a Polaris 9550, including a failed cable replacement ($450 repair) and finally a failed controller unit (est. $700 repair), I gave up on the 9550, and after discussion with a few pool equipment experts, I bought a Dolphin S300i. Like the 9550, this unit is expensive, but that is about all they have in common. In addition to the expensive repairs, the 9550s cable constantly tangled, the unit regularly stalled in a curve of my pool, the basket was
thin and the fabric would split open if full. I purchased the S300i from All Seasons Pools & Spas in Roseville, CA. The store manager, Brandon, was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. He assembled the caddy for me and had it ready to go when I arrived at the store. Brandon even registered the S300i Unit for me with his store and with Maytronics. By buying at an authorized brick and mortal authorized dealer I got a full 3 year parts & labor warranty (1 year added to the standard 2 year warranty). After my issues with the 9550 this was huge. I ran the S300i to the test of cleaning my very dirty leaf filled pool and after 3 cycles my pool was super clean. This unit actually filters while it cleans so dirt is not just stirred up and spit back out. The cable has a tangle preventing adapter that works really well. The top loading basket and filter unit is easy to access and clean. It pick up big leaves and pretty much everything except for a few 12+ long redwood twigs which I manually removed. If with proper care, the S300i last as long as the 7 to 10 years that I am hearing it should, I will be extremely happy, especially if most of those years are trouble free
Demo model from Brown's pool Newnan, Ga
Previously owned a Hayward tigershark until it fell apart do to age. Obtained a s300i dolphin which operates way better than the tigershark. Very pleased with this model. Browns Pool pointed me in the right direction to try the dolphin and best decision I could make.
S300i review - Andriod app needs work
I love the robot, but the app hangs at some point with every use. I have used 3 different Android devices. I can take close to a full minute finding robots before the bluetooth connection is made. 10% of the time it will just spin at that point, Once I get past that about 30% of the time it hangs receiving info for robot . To recover I have to shut down the app and restart it. When I do get to the point where it allows me to start cleaning and the robot takes off it is common for the app to lock up with I try to change the cleaning mode.
Almost Perfect.
Cleans well, I am happy I purchased the model with the filters. It picks up the finest of dust as well as small to medium leaves. The reasons for the mark down are design and app. The app locks up frequently so I have it scheduled to run each night and it does so with out issue. As far as design, the cord should swivel so it doesnt tangle and there should be a pressure sensor to indicate the filters are dirty or clogged. Bottom line you will have a clean pool with this unit.
Dolphin
It does a good job but the cord tangles up constantly. It needs to be able to swivel like the Polaris does. Also, if I want to turn it on for an hour or whatever, it messes up the schedule I have set and I have to reprogram the schedule which is really a pain. I think there needs to be some improvements made on this product. I agree with someone elses reviewwhen you are trying to connect the IPhone app to the Dolphin it takes a while for it to connect. The circle just spins for a bit. A little annoying.
Superb!!!
My first cleaner and I wanted to make sure I got one with longevity and one that works well. Im very glad I made this purchase. This thing cleans the walls well, including the water line. It removes all in one cycle and the bag is super easy to remove and clean out. I love the app features that allow me to pin point where I need a quick clean, and bringing it to the surface for removal is a snap. My one complaint is the cord. It most definitely needs to be a swivel cord. This is the reason why only four stars. Other than that, I am super impressed with my S300i.
Awesome Pool Cleaner
This is my 1st automatic pool cleaner for my fiberglass pool. Ive had my pool for 9 years and I waited this long as I heard that pool cleaners couldnt get up my walls, steps and seats this one came very highly recommended. I love the app and the only reason I gave 4 stars is that it does clean the steps very well, but its not great at getting in the seats, but overall I love this cleaner and it makes my life so much easier. Would definitely recommend purchasing this Dolphin!
Pretty Good
This is my second Dolphin. The first was a Dolphin Diagnostic. (Original) At my old house we ran that for close to 8yr before it broke down. We moved the next season. Now at new house we installed a larger pool and first thing on the list was to buy a Dolphin Robot. I looked at many but the years I got from my first Dolphin I was set on Maytronics. We have had the S300i one season and it worked great. Then second season it started to fail. Would not startup. Took to dealer and they tested everything passed. Took home worked for 2 cycles then failed to start again. Even App would not connect. Lucky I purchased from an authorized dealer so I had 2yr warranty. I had to pay to send for repair and week later received it back they replaced Power Supply. I am getting ready to open pool this season and Hopefully it will work fine. I will update this review if I have problems. Functionally the robot is great. It gets the sides and bottom of pool really well. And when I want to run it really quick before company comes over or if I see stuff settled on bottom I can us the app to schedule a quick bottom only cycle. A robot cleaner is a must for me and my pool care. As long as I have no more trouble with this model I would recommend it.
A Must Have!
I knew when the wife wanted a pool, I would have to clean it. This thing is worth its weight in gold.
Probably good for regular pools
I bought the S300I thinking if anything could clean my pool while I did other chores this was it. Where I live broad leaves, pine needles, pollen, and dirt are a constant battle. The intake for leaves is kind of small for what I need, but its wide shape is better than circular ones for getting the pine needles. My pool is 10ft deep and about 40k gallons. It will move back and forth quickly without slowing down. While it does attack the leaves aggressively I wish they would make a beefier model for pools like mine. The app is less than useless cant get it to work. Cleaning it out isnt the easiest as leaves get caught in the vents and theres no way to take them off to clean them out you have to wash them back and try to fish them out. So there is room for design improvement in my opinion. If any pool is a proving ground for robot cleaners mine is it. If you have mild leaves and dirt this will probably work great, but if you get a lot of leaves this will help but you will either have to help it or run it several cycles through out the day. If your thinking about buying this robot and arent surrounded by trees this will probably work great, but if I didnt have all the trees I would have gone with a smaller one.
