Dolphin S300 Pool Cleaner
The Dolphin S300 is the deluxe model of the brands S Series of robotic pool cleaners. Of the four machines, the S300 is the second most expensive and is quite a jump in price from the lower-level options, the S 50 and S 200. The S300 markets modern features like Bluetooth connection, manual navigation, multiple cycle times and cleaning modes, a caddy included with purchase, and more. We dove in to see what the S300 is like in action, and if its really an upgrade worth the cost.
Standout Features of the S300
PowerStream Drive System
This patent-pending mobility system creates a multi-directional water flow from internal jets. The force they expel through the ducts on the exterior of the S300 help the cleaners dexterity underwater, allowing it to make sharp turns, climb tight spaces, and maintain grip on vertical surfaces.
Bluetooth Navigation
Through the MyDolphin app on your smart device, you can manually drive the S300 to hard-to-reach spots. The app allows you to control it in the water instead of waiting for it to complete an entire cleaning job.
Optional Cleaning Cycles and Modes
Unlike the lower-end models of the S Series, the S300 offers two different cleaning cycle times and cleaning modes. Select a quick, one-hour clean, or go with a standard, two-hour job.
Anti-Tangle Swivel
Dolphins patented anti-tangle swivel takes the headache out of 60-foot cords tangling into heaps of knots. Its one of the game-changing developmen
ts of the robotic pool cleaner industry.
Top-Loading Filter Basket
The easy-to-clean filter basket pops out of the top of the S300, and it comes with two filter choices. Use the fine basket for regular cleanings or larger debris, and use the ultra-fine basket to filter smaller particles.
Two-Year Limited Warranty
Maytronics offers 24 months of coverage on plastic parts, the power supply, cable, and motor. Brushes, tracks, and filters are covered for 12 months.
The S300s Cleaning Performance
Mobility as Good as It Gets
Thanks to the PowerStream mobility system, the S300 is remarkably dexterous underwater. The jets on the side and rear of the cleaner can propel it forward powerfully or make it turn on a dime. Plus, the outward force of the jets helps the S300 cling to walls and other awkward surfaces. We saw the S300 climb from the deep end of an 8-foot pool all the way to the waterline on every cleaning pass-through.
The S300 also handles common obstacles for robotic pool cleaners very well. It managed to shimmy all the way up two sets of underwater steps, as opposed to only covering the bottom few. Once at the top of the steps, it reared upward to scrub the waterline, even though it couldnt be flat on the side of the pool. We havent seen many robotic pool cleaners manage that before.
The S300 advertises being able to scrub waterlines, and it actually does. It climbed all the way up to the tile coping that rises about six inches above the water on every cleaning pass-through. In one particularly tricky area, it crawled above the waterline that lies below a stone cave feature. It actually shimmied up and out of the water by about half of its length before descending again.
Suction Power
This robotic pool cleaner is obviously powerful in the sense that it can move with agility and tackle tough obstacles, but we were interested to see what kind of suction capabilities it had.
As the S300 crawled across the bottom of the pool, it cleared the floor of visible debris like leaves, twigs, and acorns. It left nothing behind, nor did it kick up debris in its wake. Even in the shallow end, we saw it suck up small piles of settled dirt and thin grass clippings. The suction power is complemented a great deal by the dual brushes. The front brush on the S300 actively scrubs surfaces, so it dislodges any stuck-on debris that vacuuming cant get alone.
Filters at Work
The S300 uses top-loading filter baskets. These are known for being incredibly easy to clean. The filter baskets come with both a standard fine filter and ultra-fine filter, so you can switch them out depending on what kind of cleaning your pool requires.
When we pulled the fine filter basket out of the S300 after a standard cleaning job, it was almost full of large debris. After a storm or long break between pool cleanings, you may have to clean out the filters mid-job a few times, but its a small price to pay for not having to clean up that mess yourself.
We didnt test the S300 with the ultra-fine filter basket, but it would be ideal to use when you want to do a deep clean or need to filter out smaller particles like dirt, dust, and silt.
What Its Like to Operate
Multi-Function Power Supply
The S300 has a multi-function power supply that attaches to the included caddy. This interface is simple and straightforward with only a few buttons. From the power supply, you can select your cleaning mode (quick or standard) and set a weekly timer. The timer option ranges from once a week to every other day and every three days. It resets weekly, though, so youll have to select your weekly timer option every seven days.
Using Bluetooth Navigation
Unlike the lower two models of the S Series, the S300 has Bluetooth capabilities. You can download the MyDolphin app and use this to set a weekly schedule and even manually drive your S300.
The MyDolphin app is better than it used to be, but it still leaves much to be desired. When we tried navigating the S300 through the manual functionality, it lagged and was slow to respond to commands. Truth be told, you have to have a lot of patience to manually navigate the S300, and it might be just as easy to press one button and let it do a quick cleaning job than try to coerce it to follow remote commands.
Lightweight
The S300 only weighs 16.5 pounds. It also has a quick-release feature when you pull it out of the water, so all of the water from its cleaning job drains rapidly (without releasing any debris). Plus, it comes with a caddy at no extra cost. This makes transporting and storing the robotic pool cleaner much easier.
Maintenance for the S300
Filters
The filtration system gets five stars for both function and maintenance. It manages to capture debris of all shapes and sizes, and a lot of it. Best of all, its ridiculously easy to clean. Just pop open the top of the S300 and pull the filter basket out. After you dump out any large debris, all you have to do is rinse the basket itself clean. Just be sure you dont leave a dirty basket out to dry.
Caddy
Like we mentioned before, having the caddy makes transporting and storing the S300 way easier. While the cleaner is not heavy, lugging it to and from your pool shed is no sweat if youre pulling it on a caddy instead of heaving it with one arm. Plus, it stores the power supply on the top portion of the caddy and has a hook to wrap the 60-foot cable around.
Cord
The S300 has Dolphins patented anti-tangle swivel. While this keeps knots and tangles at bay, you still need to watch out for any kinks developing. It certainly keeps the cord from tangling in on itself, but check it every week or so to see if you need to disconnect it and stretch it out.
Our Consensus
Dolphin S300s robotic pool cleaner is excellent at cleaning pools. It scrubs diligently, has strong suction power, and climbs up and over obstacles remarkably well. It has a great filtration system that requires hardly any maintenance at all, and it leaves pools sparkling clean.
However, the additional features that make this a pricier model of the S Series wont appeal to all pool owners. The Bluetooth capability is nice to have, but you need patience to actually manually drive the S300 from the app, as it can leave users frustrated from lagging or disconnecting altogether. The quick and standard cleaning options are also convenient, but those combined with the smart technology may not be worth the jump in price for some.
If you value a robotic pool cleaner that can go a little above and beyond the norm with bells and whistles less expensive models dont have, the S300 is a solid choice. Itll clean your pool to a tee, and you can take advantage of its smart features and customizable options. But if you want the same kind of cleaning power without the flair, youd likely be just as happy with the S300s little sibling, the S200. Either way, youll be passing the hard work off to a quality robotic pool cleaner. Youll just pay a different price

Customer Reviews
How would you rate Dolphin S300 Pool Cleaner?*
Dolphin S300
The cleaner does a thorough job cleaning the entire pool, even the water line. I purchased the cleaner when they were running a $75 rebate promotion. Filled out and mailed in the forms and followed up with emails as I was completely ignored by the company. Dont expect the rebate. Makes me worry if something goes wrong with the cleaner in the future.
Best Cleaner Ever
This is the best pool cleaner ever. I like the idea of how it operates. It is heavy. But thats what the grandkids are for- lifting. I turn it on through the IPad app. Then at the end of the day, it gets pulled out and I rinse the filter. It doesnt get much easier than that.
Love this cleaner
This is my second year with this cleaner. After struggling with Polaris for many years I am so pleased with the Dolphin. Easy to clean. Cleans well. Only became entangled with cord once. The cord does twist on itself but I simply untwist it every time I empty it. Highly recommend it over the Polaris. Seemed I was always working on the Polaris.
Outstanding pool cleaner
Expensive, but worth the investment to minimize your cleaning time and maximize your pool time. We have a Barrier Reef Fiberglas in-ground pool. The pool has plenty of curves and free-form steps. This cleaner cleans everything. I typically operate it on the 2 hour cleaning cycle and that is all it takes. I use the app to setup the cleaning cycle schedule so it cleans while we sleep. Like mentioned in other reviews it cleans up the worst of Fall leaves, but count on cleaning out the filter basket frequently, which couldnt be easier. The cable does get twists in it at times but that is easy to remedy by disconnecting the cable from the controller and untwisting it and reconnecting it. I highly recommend this pool cleaner!
Dolphin S300
The Dolphin S300 works great. I love the basket and its screens are easy to clean. It can get overwhelmed with leaves so if you have a lot in your pool, plan on emptying it a lot. it does a great job on the water line and doesnt seem to get caught up on anything. The caddy is very convenient and it is simple to use.
Fired my pool guy
Product works great.Ive fired my pool guy.The original app had a great update. Can set different modes from my smartphone. It gets the pool clean !! I have to untangle the cord once in a while but not a big deal.
My Dolphin
I love my Dolphin 300. I tried other pool robot cleaners but they were too heavy when lifting out of the pool. The 300 is also easy to clean the filters. Only negative is that the cleaner is a bit too pricey
Great...But the Cord
I purchased the S300 a year ago for my inground pool. This Dolphin works great as long as I keep the coord from the robot to the controller tangle free, which is an enduring feat for me. I pull it out of the pool constantly trying to untangle for it to only go back to the big mass of tangles after the next use. Great at picking up debris from the bottom of the pool.
I have 2 Dolphin 5300"s
I purchased 2 Dolphin cleaners at one time. I have 2 pools at 2 homes in different states. I maintain them myself. One is salt and one is chlorine. I have had them for about 9 months so far. I will say they clean very well. I do not leave them in the pool for days at a time. Once the pool is clean I remove them. Cleaning the basket on the machine is a breeze. I do have to make sure that the cord does not get wound up in its self. Sometimes it gets hung up on my steps or the shallow area for my lounge chairs. Other that that I think it is a great machine. No mechanical issues so far.
A Unique Device
We purchased the S300 to replace a suction cleaner that slowed down as the filter filled up. In order to keep the suction cleaner running we had to throttle down the skimmer and turn off the bottom drain even when the filter was clean. The S300 is completely independent of the filter and circulation system so can clean even if the pool pump is off or the filter is dirty. A great benefit, too, is we can run the skimmer at full throttle which helps keep the surface a lot cleaner. So, summarizing m
y thoughts: Pros: The S300 runs independently of the pump and filter system. It can be set to run for 2 hours and cleans the sides; or 1 hour to just vacuum the bottom. It can be set to run every day for a 5 day period after which it has to be reset (urges you to clean the unit). Very easy to clean with a removable basket that is easy to hose off, unlike many robots that have pleated filters. The basket gives two choices, very fine mesh screens or a filter material. I use the screens. The bluetooth feature lets me clean areas it misses if I have the patience to run it. I often just run another cycle. Cons: The unit does not have a memory so isnt able determine if it covers the entire bottom. It often leaves patches of debry untouched, especially along the base of the walls. (The suction cleaner ran all the time so it kept the bottom cleaner, but it also left patches untouched). To be fair, we only use the 1 hour cycle because the coaming of our pool is concrete. When we run the two hour cycle it rises up the wall and the rubber brushes churn against the concrete coaming so we fear it will eventually tear the brushes up. The power supply has to be near an outlet so the cable connecting the power supply to the unit lays on the pool deck. As it cleans the rubber brushes tend to stir up the lighter particles so they dont all get sucked into the machine. The blue tooth option is rather rudimentary. It gives good fore and aft control but there is no real steering function. To turn it you have to patiently wait for the water jets in the unit to tilt the unit and push it sideways to pivot it and hope it lands in the direction you want. Summary: Not a perfect machine but it serves our purpose better than the suction cleaners. Have not regretted purchasing this unit and have yet to talk to someone who has one that performs better
Satisfied overall
Pool robot cleans the pool pretty well, although definitely only gets the waterline in a few spots. The cord failed for me after 6 months but they replaced it under warranty. The remote control app doesnt work at all and is completely useless. But overall is really does clean the pool well and is very easy to empty so I am satisfied.
Cleans great. Not reliable. Keeps malfunctioning.
Does not clean free form pools
I tried two demos units, one a Dolphin Echo and the other a Dolphin S300. I have a small L shaped pool and both cleaners would not automatically go into the short side of the L. I even tried starting the unit with the unit in the short side, and it still did not clean it! The only way the unit entered the short side of the L was to drive it there via the app. May work good for a rectangular pool, but not for a free form pool.
Does a good job, but........
This robot does a great job of keeping our pool bottom and water line clean. Easy to clean the filters. My 2 issues: The cleaning cycle only lasts about 3 hours, so I have to remember to go back out and start it again to finish cleaning the pool. The cord is horrible. It does not have a swivel where it connects to the robot so it is constantly tangling/knotting up and when you try to wind it to hang on the stand you have to constantly flip/turn the cording.
Doesn't Last
This is my third Dolphin I have owned. I bought the S300 in May of 2016 ( 3 month out of Warranty). It stopped working and the lady from the pool store said its cheaper to buy a new one vs. getting this fixed. Hard to justify shelling out $1,200 every 2 1/2 years. It worked great up until this point.
Works great, when it is working!
Much like anything else in this world, shelf life is about 2 years before breaking down. Sad that this item is about $1,000 but doesnt come with an extended warranty.
Dolphin S300
Not very happy with this machine. Im on my second controller and third motor. The original motor seemed to be the quickest till it died. This latest motor is painfully slow going forward and fast in reverse. It takes about 3 hours to clean our 18? x36? rectangular pool and there will still be stuff on the bottom. The clean out is nice and so far cord tangling has not been a problem. The worst part has been dealing with service and getting through to the right people very confusing. Interesting enough everytime we get a new motor all the cleaning functions work (extended clean cycles etc ) and then after the first use it goes back to the 1 hour or 2 hour limit. If the unit actually cleaned the pool in 1 hour this would be fine but when you have to restart it every hour for 3 hours to get the pool relatively clean its a pain. It would be nice if the same software was standard on all the machines. Not that the warranty is almost over I am not looking forward to the future of this unit.
