Dolphin Sigma Pool Cleaner

As the robotic pool cleaner industry grows by leaps and bounds, Maytronics has remained a frontrunner in developing new products and new technology. One of their latest models of robotic pool cleaners is the Sigma from their Dolphin line. Launched in 2018, the Sigma is part of Dolphin’s deluxe class of robotic pool cleaners. The description goes so far as to say it has “reinterpreted” the laws of physics. We decided to put the Dolphin Sigma to the test and see how it lived up to these expectations – and we weren’t disappointed.

First Impressions
At first glance, the Sigma just looks more compact, more powerful, and sleeker than many of its counterparts. It’s heavy, weighing 24.6 pounds, but its power in the water isn’t hindered at all by its weight. The handle makes for easy lifting and carrying, but you can also order a caddy for even more streamlined transporting and storage.

The set-up was seamless, and the Sigma arrived pretty much ready to get to work after unboxing it. Once it was plugged in and had reached the bottom of the pool, it was time to see it go to work.

The Sigma in Action
To be quite honest, many robotic pool cleaners on the market today are lackluster. Like a glorified feather duster for the pool, they’ll often wander aimlessly and do a superficial-at-best cleaning job, leaving the same pile of leaves untouched for days. Not the Sigma.

Once we saw the Dolphin Sigma in action, we found three things that particularly set this robotic pool

cleaner apart from all others: Gyroscope technology, DC motors, and SmartNav Robotic Scanning.

The Game-Changing Gyroscope
Dolphin’s engineers added a three-axis gyroscope to the Sigma, which includes high-tech sensors that detect and measure the rate of rotation of an object around a particular axis. To put it in laymen’s terms, these sensors keep tabs on what the robot is doing and send information to the microprocessor so it can essentially think for itself.

Like a Mars Rover for the pool, the gyroscopic technology monitors and controls position, orientation, direction, and rotation. That sounds like a lot of technical jargon until you actually get to watch it in reality – then it’s really awesome.

The Sigma covered every surface of the pool without retracing its steps monotonously or randomly overlooking certain sections. And when we say every surface of the pool, we mean every surface. The gyroscopic stabilization keeps the Sigma from floating away from surfaces, even when it is climbing walls or navigating underwater steps or curves. It delivers a precise control unlike anything we’ve seen in competitors’ robotic pool cleaners, even cleaning the tile and waterline with pinpoint accuracy. For such a large machine, it navigates the pool gracefully and precisely. Every pool has those hard-to-reach corners or deep curves that are easy to overlook by both humans and machines, but the Sigma covers them easily.

Commercial-Grade Efficiency and Power
Most old-fashioned pool cleaners use AC motors that notoriously guzzle power and raise your electric bill even higher than usual in the hot months. The Sigma, however, uses a whopping three DC motors. This choice allows the robot to provide up to five times the torque without stalling, and it requires nearly 90% less energy than traditional pool cleaners. Dolphin approximates it costing 5 cents an hour to operate. That’s an energy-efficient number we can get behind.

The power of the Sigma is obvious when you watch it work. It has a much higher flow rate, seamlessly cleaning a 50-foot pool in just 2.5 hours. It moves with a steady quickness thanks to the balancing act of the gyroscope mixed with the power of the three DC motors.

Navigation Expert
The gyroscopic control system shines again in the SmartNav 3.0 navigation. Like we mentioned before, even the best engineered robotic pool cleaners will still wander around aimlessly without a smart control system to map out a path for it. During a cleaning, the Sigma knows what surface area it has covered already, avoiding the redundancy of cleaning the same space twice. More than that, it actually calculates the optimal pattern of your pool for a faster and more efficient cleaning time.

When we put it to the test, the Sigma didn’t linger mindlessly in one area of the pool, nor did it miss any of the dispersed debris we had placed around the bottom. Most impressive of all, though, was how it avoided getting its cord tangled like so many previous cleaners.

But Did It Actually Clean?
Technology mumbo jumbo aside, let’s get down to brass tacks. The Dolphin Sigma cleaned with exceptional results.

The pool we used for our testing was well overdue for a cleaning. We had let leaves, flower buds, pollen, bugs, and dog toys accumulate for several days, not to mention the regular algae buildup. There was a distinct presence of sludge along the waterline of the tile, too. Then we let the Sigma loose.

After it did its first 2.5 hour cleaning cycle, the pool was virtually spotless. Of course it bypassed the tennis balls left behind by the dog, but it sucked up all of the leaves and other bits of flora with ease. The real sign of accomplishment was the disappearance of the sludge along the waterline. Honestly, we expected it to leave behind at least a bit of debris since the pool had gone so long between cleanings, but we were disappointed to not be disappointed. The Sigma cleans with incredible precision.

The Proof is in the Filters
We saw the larger debris disappear, but how well did the Sigma actually clean the water? And how well did it scrub the sides of the pool?

Well, we found our answer in the filters.

The Sigma is fitted with two top-loading cartridge filters. Unlike the same devices from years past, these are larger and infinitely easier to clean. When we went to clean them out after the Sigma’s first test clean, they were impressively full of large debris, and the filter was satisfyingly dark with fine dirt and algae. With a filtration rate of 75 gallons per minute, it’s no wonder. The Sigma leaves behind remarkable water quality.

If you look closely at the Sigma, you’ll see another reason it grabs so much during its cleaning runs – the brushes. Dolphin has patented its PowerClean dual scrubbing brushes, which actively scrub the pool’s surface instead of just passing over it for larger particles. With two different textures of power scrubs, the PowerClean feature actually scrubs every square inch of the pool. Plus, it’s supposed to be especially effective against biofilm, which is one of the biggest frustrations a pool owner can face. And unlike most robotic pool cleaners, the sigma is bi-directional, so it vacuums while going forward as well as reverse.

On top of its efficiency, we found the regular maintenance of the Sigma to be pretty straightforward, too. No one likes cleaning pool filters, but this one is relatively painless. Just have a hose handy and spray all the pieces down, then snap it back together with Dolphin’s nifty SnapLoc feature.

Will It Give Me a Headache?
If you’ve owned a pool for any time at all, you know the frustration that can come with owning a robotic pool cleaner. They get tangled up. They shut down mid-job. They don’t pick up the most obvious mess. They spray water in your face. They’re a nuisance to clean.

But as veteran pool owners, we can confidently say the Dolphin Sigma appears to circumvent all of these headaches.

One of our favorite features that makes an owner’s life easier is the MyDolphin app. You can register any Dolphin robot pool cleaner online and control it remotely from your phone. From there you can schedule cleaning programs, set a weekly timer, and even manually control the Sigma’s cleaning job. As far as apps go, it’s not the smoothest ride in the world and may be a little frustrating for users who aren’t so tech-savvy. Sometimes the Bluetooth disconnects or has trouble connecting to the robot, but it’s a great resource.

The other standout perk of the Sigma is the ease of maintenance and upkeep. As any pool owner knows, you can’t take shortcuts to maintaining your pool without very real (and oftentimes expensive) consequences. Fortunately, there is no song and dance required with the Sigma. After each clean you need to rinse the filter while it is still wet, and you remove debris from the impeller when you notice it’s there. You can easily service your Sigma in just 10-15 minutes total. Keep it stored in a protected, dry area when it’s not in use, and it’ll be ready to go for the next cleaning – whether that’s tomorrow or next summer.

Of all the bells and whistles that come on the Sigma, the very best one is the tangle-free swivel. This patented feature was a groundbreaker when the Dolphin engineers created it several years ago. Without it, maintenance would quickly and easily become a bonafide nightmare with an inevitable tangled hassle. But the tangle-free swivel on the cable has a full 360-degree rotation, preventing the power cord from wrapping itself into an impossible mess. As longtime pool owners, we give Dolphin all the applause for making our lives easier with the tangle-free cord feature. If you’ve ever had to untangle a pool cleaner cord with the hot sun bearing down on you in the middle of July, you’ll appreciate it too. It’s an absolute game changer in the pool-cleaning industry.

What Could be Improved?
To speak candidly, there’s not much to improve with the Dolphin Sigma. It genuinely runs like a commercial grade robotic pool cleaner at a consumer price.

That being said, it is pricey. At a regular price of $1,599, it is not for the faint of financial heart. However, we do think it is worth the price tag, and you can find many for closer to $1,200. The energy efficiency alone compensates for the up-front cost in the long term, and it’s the most intelligent pool cleaner on the market currently.

As we mentioned before, the MyDolphin app is good, but it’s not great. It’s user friendly enough, but it may frustrate users who aren’t tech-minded. But the app is not a necessity to operate the Sigma by any means, and you can easily manage cleanings from the power supply.

The Sigma is heavy because it uses triple motors that are much larger and more powerful than motors found in regular commercial pool robots. We think the few extra pounds are worth it, but you may want to order the caddy so you can make transporting the Sigma from the pool shed to the water easier. It also comes with a convenient cord storage system so you can easily wrap the 60-foot cord, much like a vacuum cleaner.

What Ultimately Sets the Sigma Apart?
A Winning Warranty
You’d be hard-pressed to find a plain chair with four legs that has a three-year warranty, much less a state-of-the-art robotic pool cleaner. But Sigma offers one of the longest limited warranties on the market – three years – backed by Maytronics. Plus, it has a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can return it if it’s not the right fit for you.

Smart Technology
Like a Roomba for your pool, the Sigma has the technological chops to map and memorize the layout of your pool, creating the best and most efficient routes for quick and hard-hitting cleaning. Plus, the addition of gyroscopic technology makes it faster, more powerful, and more efficient.

Power in Full
We mentioned the three DC motors earlier, but it’s important to appreciate the full effect of their power. Working alongside the gyroscopic technology, the Sigma’s motors lend themselves to a higher flow rate, more suction, and faster cleaning times overall. Not to mention they eat up way less of your electric bill than lower quality pool cleaners.

All in all, the Dolphin Sigma is one of the best robotic pool cleaners you can buy today. It isn’t cheap, but you also get what you pay for (and then some). Having seen many, many robotic pool cleaners at work over the years, we can wholeheartedly say the Sigma is one of the best investments you can make for your pool. Best of all, it’s compatible with virtually every pool shape, and surface up to 50 feet. So no matter the shape and size of your aquatic oasis, the Sigma could be the game-changer you’ve been waiting for

This is the best cleaner that I had. Dolphin knocked it out of the park with this one .Going from and older Dolphin that was garbage to this is leaps and bounds.I had Polaris before no comparison to the Dolphin Sigma with two different filters you can pick up micro debris. I had some scale and algae heavy on the bottom of pool and up walls to the water line .The sigma cleaned it all up even the acorns and the big oak leaves got sucked up by the Sigma. This was well worth the money

Fantastic Job

Ted Bowman -

Have only had it for a month but it does a fantastic job. Had a polaris 9450 that was ok if the POS motor would last more than 3 years. This Dolphin Sigma really does a good job scrubbing the walls of the pool. I have not had to brush the walls in 4 weeks. The 3 motors shoots the water out the top vs behind the unit like all the other brands do which stirs up debris that never gets vacuumed. My Polaris was in the pool every day having to clean,,, the Dolphin every 3 or 4 days because it does such a good job. I’ll never regret paying what I paid because of the time it gave me back for myself. My pool is 32,000 gallons and it does the job in about 2 hours. So worth it, but my only complaint is you spend $1,300 bucks and you’d think the dang caddy would come with it but that’s another $130. Please!

I am so happy!

Leslie H -

My pool is very close to my neighbor's beautiful HUGE pine tree. I have a never ending issue with debris from the tree...pollen, bark, needles, and bits of cones. Also I have a "Grand-Dog" (Labrador) who swims often and sheds constantly. The Letro Legend that came with the pool tried but was never successful at thoroughly cleaning the bottom. The Dolphin Sigma is amazing! This 12 year old pool has never been so clean. To say I love it may be an understatement. I take videos of it to show friends, yeah, OK that may be a little weird...The first couple of times we ran the Sigma Robotic Cleaner the filters were filled with huge amounts of sludgy goop all that stuff was in my pool...ICK. Now the filters have a more normal amount of debris. Seriously crystal clear and clean water, I am so happy!

Zachary Eddy -

We live in an area with a very heavy bio-loading on our pool (Savannah). We have multiple large oak trees among other species that make a mess of our pool on a regular basis. Prior to ordering the Sigma, we had the typical jet pump-powered pool cleaner on a daily timer. The bag was always filling up pretty quick and the tracks were starting to wear so the motion was erratic. We contemplated getting a newer model but I found this Sigma on line and ordered it. I'm glad I did! No more random tail whips of water from the cleaner and it has done a great job. I'd say the two filters are each about the volume of the prior pump filter bag, so we get double the volume of debris before cleaning. More importantly, this unit has be run daily for almost 9 months while providing us with a cleaner pool. I will say that just recently the bluetooth capability has stopped working but the Sigma keeps working just fine. I don't need the bluetooth capability and never really used the virtual joystick to move it around. I just let it do it's thing.

Thank you Dolphin Sigma!

Kathy Lynne -

My husband always took care of our very large pool. Recently he had a heart attack which caused a lung condition to come out of remission and go crazy. He is now on a lung transplant list. Needless to say we had to hire someone, move, or I had to find a way to handle the task that took him hours every day. I found that technology had come to my rescue. I ordered the Dolphin Sigma because it seemed the easiest to handle and the technology was the latest. It is awesome!! I put it in the pool, plug in the unit, and push the on button. End of story. I had just replastered the pool and this picked up all the tiny specks of plaster dust, leaves, twigs, and dirt. By the time a two hour cycle is done, the pool is spotless and sparkling. I then lift the sigma out of the pool, drain off the water, unplug the unit, and set it on the dolly. Then I pop up the cartridge cleaners and hose them clean- 3 minutes tops, and put them back in. No more hoses and vacuums in the pool all day. My grandchildren can swim in a clean pool with nothing in their way. I feel very blessed and thankful that this machine has helped us stay in our home. One headache and chore done! Thank you Dolphin Sigma 2019!!

Love this thing! Filters, brushes, cleans!! Would've given it 5 stars but: A lot of $ for limited software and programmability. it doesn't do steps well. It only climbs to the coping 25% during a 2.5hr cleaning cycle. Info says it learns pool. It seems to be random like polaris but much, much better job. Still love it and would buy it again 1 month into ownership.

The unit arrived on time, in good shape, and worked right out of the box. I was up and running in 15-20 minutes. Running it its first night is did a great job cleaning my not-so-dirty pool and the cable was clearly NOT tangled. Note: It does a GREAT job getting above the waterline to scrub the walls. Impressive wall suction and stability. First cleaning of the filters was CAKE. I really do appreciate the top load panel innovation. Note on filters: Comes with 2 sets, it is not clear which filters are the smaller micron filters. Note on manual: Digital manual accessible through the iphone app is klunky and incomplete. Note on marketing:2 stage filtering is mentioned, but I'm not sure how that is really a thing. You can SWAP filter types, but I dont see how to stack them OR where a 2nd stage would be.Perhaps a disconnect on version / part numbers. I purchased this to replace my recently deceased but very heavily used Aquabot T4RC. I was nervous to purchase this unit because there was very little feedback and information to illustrate its long-term value. Obviously the jury will be out on this for some time. I’ll be trying out the daily automation routine through the weekend to see how it does. The phone Bluetooth remote control works SOMEWHAT better than the wonky remote on my old T4RC

We inherited a Polaris pressure cleaner with our pool when we moved into our house a couple of years ago. The Polaris cleaner did a decent job, but it was rather dated, and had have a couple of cons that were rather annoying. One was that it always seemed to get stuck on our ladder in the deep end (despite putting the guards in that side of the ladder). This meant that we had to manual extract it from this location several times during the course of a cleaning. Two, it always missed several spots that we either ignored, more manually vacuumed when the cycle completed. To make life easier, we decided to splurge on the Dolphin Sigma, which seemed to have a lot of modern bells and whistles. I have to admit, it does a better job than the pressure vacuum in less time while using less energy. However, we still have the same two issues as before. Now, instead of the ladder, it gets stuck several times a cycle on the drain cap on the bottom of the shallow end which requires manual extraction (picture). This means that we can't really run it when we aren't home, and can't use any of the auto features. Like the pressure vacuum, it also misses several locations during a cleaning cycle. The remote control feature seems like it should be a solution to this issue, but we haven't been able to actually make that work yet. I would give it five stars if it hit all spots and didn't get repeatedly get stuck on a standard drain cap on the bottom, so I removed a star for each of these two reasons....which was why we decided to explore such an expensive option in the first place.

Love this thing!

Fantastic Job

My only compaint is that this is a heavy unit to lift out of the pool. Does a fantastic job of cleaning. The blue-tooth feature requires one to be very close to the power unit but I don't use it anyway.

Excellent through first three months of use. Efficient and thorough cleaning of all surfaces (bottom, walls, stairs) of our plaster pool. Filters very easy to rinse with hose. Easy storage away from pool with optional Premier Caddy, can be wheeled to pool deck and hooked up and functioning within a minute.

Loving the clean pool

2 months in and loving the clean pool. Bluetooth is fun once or twice but really is not responsive enough. Put it in auto mode and you will be a happy camper, just do not forget to empty it because it really does clean the pool better than you think it will.

Sigma pool cleaner even goes up sides and stairs, WOW! The pool has some staining and I thought I would have to pressure wash the pool. Sigma has gotten most of the staining off, Great Job. If I were to rate it from 1 to 10 I would give it a 11 or 12!

Worth the investment

We are longtime dolphin owners. Our last model was nearly seven years old when it finally died. We bought this one based on the reviews and LOVE it. Its so much faster and cleans the wall of our pool so well. Definitely an upgrade and worth the investment.

Sigma Review

Jerry Petrova -

I have a screened-in lanai, so I get mostly small bits of debris, much of it floating. (I use a floating autonomous cleaner for fine surface stuff.) This is a saltwater pool using an external DE filter. When refilling the large DE filter, a lot escapes the system - the Sigma is great at removing it. Even though I have a new filter, there is still a fair amount of stuff picked up by Sigma weekly (maybe 1/4" layer at the bottom of the Sigma screens.) Cleaning Sigma's top-loading filters is very easy - very well engineered. It does a good job in cleaning my pool (about 12,000 gals.) I run it about 2x a week. It climbs right up to the waterline - incredible. I've had Sigma for about 2 months now, my first submersible cleaner. Came without a caddy, which was purchased on the same order - a recommended tool. The remote control (Bluethooth to iPad Air2) works, but the response time is about 2 seconds. As an RC pilot, I find this to be incredibly slow - but the Sigma is not going to fly off! I have toyed with the Remote, but not something I use normally. My only wish is that it should have a built-in video camera - LOL. I've filmed it with some actions cams under water - interesting. According to the box, this is made in Israel. A very good product, including the power supply and cable.

I'm Very Happy

M. Zimmerman -

1) It gets hung up on the main drain at least once per cleaning cycle - like a turtle on its back. The tracks are on the sides, and brushes are front and back, with nothing moving in the entire central under-belly. If the robot drives up on the main drain dead-on, it gets stuck and can't get itself free. A light tug on the cord sets it free and it continues without any problems. However, when running unattended, this has been a big issue. It got stuck at the beginning of the cycle one time, and

I didn't notice until near the end of its routine. There are a few devices on the market that make a ramp (like a ring around the drain), and clips that create a dome over the drain cover. These options are ~$50, last only a few years, may be difficult to assemble, and reviews are generally horrible. But someone posted an interesting solution, and I've been trying to make it work. That is, screw a 1" PVC cap (with stainless screw & washer) to the main drain cover to create a 'dome'. It should lose balance when it tries to climb the dome, causing at least one track or brush to contact the pool bottom. My first attempt didn't work, because I used a shallow cap. My next attempt will be to use a cap & pipe (as an extension). Making it taller should do the trick. Associated problems were: weighing myself down so I could stay on the bottom (weight vest + weights on a tool belt + mask & snorkel. Pre-drilling the hole for the screw. I held onto a wood spade bit by hand, and worked it to get a hole started. Staying on the bottom while applying force to pre-drill, then use the screw driver. I used a garden claw to hook onto the main drain with one hand, while working the tool with the other. Interesting experience . . . but totally doable. Just make sure you have someone spotting you and extending a pole for you to grab onto when you come up for air. Or . . . find someone with scuba gear :) 2) The remote (blue tooth with smart phone) works, and I've used it successfully to get a few spots the robot missed (especially after it gets hung up on the main drain). However, response time between action & reaction is poor, and I usually over-compensating on turns. It's frustrating trying to get the thing pointed in the right direction . . . but it gets the job done . . . eventually. 3) No caddie. I wrote to the manufacturer and didn't get a reply. I eventually put the power supply in a patio box to keep it out of the weather, and I leave the robot in the water all the time, so not having a caddie hasn't been a problem. All-in-all, I'm very happy. The pool hasn't been this clean - ever

The one I ordered from Amazon had a defect – its handle was detached. I called Maytronics customer support and they had a new one to me two days later. I then returned the defective one to them with free shipping. Their customer support was fantastic. I’ve had the new Dolphin Sigma for a week now and am very pleased with it. It does a fantastic job cleaning the pool bottom, sides, bench and tile above the water line. I still have to sweep the tanning ledge since the Sigma isn’t supposed to be operated in less than 2 1/2 feet of water. I haven’t had many leaves, but the few I had were picked up easily. There have been several bad reviews about the remote. I didn’t get it because I have a smart phone and downloaded the Dolphin app. The app is limited but it does a good job maneuvering the Sigma in manual mode. I use it to move the Sigma onto a pool bench, then powering it off so I can easily remove it from the pool. I’ve had no problems connecting my iPhone via bluetooth to the power supply. Contrary to some other reviews, my Sigma has had no problems with my raised drains. It goes over them as if they weren’t there. One thing I haven’t seen in the other reviews is that the Sigma also works in a spa. It has no problems cleaning my unground spa, which I was unable to do with my other cleaner. I could not be more pleased with it.
